A Zen Response to Global Crisis: My Conversation with Priest and Author Shodo Spring

From Tea with Dōgen to Open Reality

Some connections happen quietly. Shodo Spring and I both participate in Genzan Quennell Sensei's weekly "Tea with Dōgen" sessions, diving deep into the writings of the great Soto Zen master. While these gatherings focus on textual study rather than personal sharing, I found myself drawn to Shodo's presence—her obvious depth of practice, her activist heart, and the care she brings to every interaction. Y can learn more about her background here: [ https://mountainsandwatersalliance.org/about-shodo-spring-a-bio/ ]

When I felt ready to launch Zen Followers' interview series, Shodo was my immediate choice. Her timing was perfect too: she's just published Open Reality: Meeting the Polycrisis Together with All Beings, a book that addresses our interconnected global challenges through the lens of Zen practice and environmental activism. Our nearly hour-long Zoom conversation reveals both Shodo's personal journey in Zen and her evolving understanding of what she terms the "polycrisis"—the complex web of ecological, social, and spiritual challenges that inspired her latest work. While this inaugural interview has a few technical rough spots (I'm learning!), Shodo's wisdom and earth-centered perspective come through clearly.

Three Books Worth Noting

Following Ezra Klein's excellent interview practice, I asked Shodo about her current reading. Her selections reflect the breadth of her interests:

  • Robin Wall Kimmerer: The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World (having previously been moved by Braiding Sweetgrass)

  • David Graeber and David Wengrow: The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity

  • Reb Anderson: The Third Turning of the Wheel: Wisdom of the Samdhinirmocana Sutra

Looking Ahead

In a post-interview conversation, Shodo revealed she's considering establishing a residential practice community within the year—an initiative that may interest readers exploring intentional living rooted in contemplative practice. Follow her work at Mountains and Waters Alliance.

She'll also be touring extensively with Open Reality, visiting Zen centers and independent bookstores throughout the Midwest and East Coast. Check her website for dates and locations.
